Can you tell us a couple things you love and hate about the Burlington VT music scene compared to other places you have lived/played?

Love: I love that there is a give and take in this scene. If you show up for other people’s shows, they will show up for yours.
Hate: There is a ceiling. You can only go so far before you run out of opportunity and you have to rely on luck. Luck, is never a very good business plan.

You do so many creative things, music, poetry, modeling, and writing. What takes priority and why? Do you think that will ever change?

I’d say music has taken priority by default. I was laid off from my full time writing job, and this kind of fell in place as a financial substitute. Poetry is childhood hobby, and modeling is a funny little surprise when people pay me for something I have absolutely nothing to do with (my looks). But I hope it all stays the same. From what I can tell, entertainment is recession proof.

Who are some women musicians that have influenced you the most?

Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Joan Armatrading, Joni Mitchell, Carol King

I heard you sing an Erykah Badu song once and just "killed it"- what are some of your favorite covers to sing?

Bag Lady, Green Eyes, On and On….

What are some of your favorite bands to see live?

I just saw Jakob Dylan with his full band. He was amazing! Erykah Badu is also killer.

If you could pick one musical goal to accomplish in the next year, what would it be?

To work less and get paid more!

What has been the biggest challenge for you so far as a musician?

It’s tough to reconcile with ego, talent, business and intelligence in an industry based on variables. There really isnt any security in this job and that can take a toll on my type A personality at times. But then I look at all the folks working 9-5’s who are losing their jobs right now. I guess we are all in the same boat.

If you could ask one musician one question, what would you ask and to who?

I would ask Joni Mitchell how she is able to talk about her feelings to clearly. The woman really hits the nail on th head.

I can not live without my…….?

Sanheizer Microphone. It’s amazing, and not that expensive….

On Sunday April 11th I hosted the 3rd Annual Bee Aware Party at Honey Gardens in Ferrisburg VT. It was a beeeeeautiful day. Dailey made his second appearance at Farmaid on October 4, 2009, along with his band The Rivals, at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in St. Louis, Missouri, joining headliners Nelson, Young, Mellencamp, and Matthews, as well as Wilco, Jason Mraz and others on the bill. Glide’s Melissa Brodeuer recently met up with Dailey.

You have come along way since I first saw you play as a solo musician in Chicago of ‘04, Rolling Stone, People, The Late Late show, etc. What is next for Will Dailey?

I have a song coming out on the 90210 soundtrack called "You’re So Cold". I just did a project with T Bone Burnett that is coming out in 2010 and I am tracking a full length album that will come out in 2010 as well. I have a bunch of new tunes that the band and I are over joyed about and we’re just working on all of them now. Hopefully

You are played Farm Aid this year, which is amazing. It is such an important event to so many people for all different reasons, why is what Farm Aid stands for so important to you?

This is my second Farm Aid and one thing I keep mentioning when talking about this year is that this is the 24th anniversary of Farm Aid which means for 24 years they have been successful, helping family farmers, getting the word out to people who eat food about the importance of where it comes from and the qualities of what you ingest. Without responsible agriculture a society fails.

What are some things you do or don’t do on the road to stay motivated, strong and feeling good?

Run laps around gas stations and lift lots of equipment. Eat good food. Don’t eat fast food even if you are starving.

You have played in bands and as a solo musician, what are some likes and dislikes of doing both?

It is obvious that when I play out as Will Dailey and even Will Dailey & The Rivals it is all on me good or bad. But I always play with a band and play rock and roll and I prefer to be on the road with my band. Occasionally there is a show or a radio or TV thing where it is just myself. Those are lonely times. However, they can be nice especially when we are doing acoustic versions of songs like "How Can I Make You Happy" or "Down The Drain" to an audience that is used to them rocking, but I prefer the first impression to be Will Dailey & The Rivals.

If anybody was going to do a cover of one of your songs, what would the song be and who would you want to cover it?

Actually I just found a band covering "How Can I make You Happy" on YouTube. It’s difficult to imagine someone else doing it until they do it.

What is one of your earliest music business mistakes that you will never make again?

John Brown Body throws down reggae unlike any other act on the live circuit. Their live show encompasses an 8-piece band with drums, bass, a three piece horn section, keyboards and guitars. In 2008 the band released Amplify which debuted #1 on Billboards Reggae Chart, #10 on CMJ’s World Music Chart, and at the end of 2008 Amplify made the “iTunes best of 2008″ list for reggae record. Glide’s Melissa Brodeur recently caught up with founding member and drummer Tommy Benedetti.

What is it about reggae that drives your soul?

I am a drum and bass junkie, to me its all about heaviness of it. Reggae is like a big stew of all different music, all the music I love. There are also so many different kinds of reggae, there is something for any day!

What other bands or type of music do you really love?

I am a die hard metal fan! I like the heavy stuff. I do love all music, I love the Roots, Wilco, Hendrix. There is no style of music that turns me off, except the real glossy commercial stuff.

What do you think is so unique about John Brown’s Body?

We have developed our own sound. There is that shared experience, that shared vision of doing what we love to do, creating and working and crafting our sound. I believe the live horn section really sets us apart from some of the bands in the reggae scene, it adds an extra vibe.

How do you think the recession has effected the music business?

When it first started, there were some dips here and there in the crowds. I think people did not want to pay $15 a ticket to see music. When we went to Hawaii was when I really noticed it. Things are already so expensive over there. I really have not noticed it too much though!

If you had to stop touring tomorrow, what is the one thing you would miss most?

Obviously the music! I have been doing this for so long, I do love the life style. I love going out, its such a beautiful thing, you see the best of people. We bring something to them and they in return bring things to us, vibes, food, etc…all the good things in life happen on tour. I would miss it and hope to not have to stop anytime in the near future!

What is the one thing in your life you are most proud of?

I am proud to be in an original band that has persevered, we made it through some really narley times, and still kept the music at a really high level. It’s really satisfying to go out and play in a consistent band, with people that you really love. You get that family vibe every night. It really is another family, and that is a very important part of my life. I am super psyched we are able to do what we do and do it well!

Other than music, what are some of your other passions?

I do love tattoos. I do love traveling, I love cycling, I love cruising urban Boston on my bike. Hanging with my friends and cats. Home time is nice, it’s the chill time. It’s good to keep busy and keep moving, but there is a time for everything!

If you could say one thing to one person…. what would you say and to who?

I would tell Scott Flynn our trombone player to shave his Abe Lincoln beard!

What was the last good book you read?

Right now I am reading Nausea by Jean Paul Sartre.. Just NO FICTION!

It’s 2AM and the show isover. Time to party? Time to sleep?

That is an easy one…TIME TO PARTY!!!

Check John Brown’s Body out as they tour the U.S. this spring with Toubab Krewe

Baking was never my thing. I did not bake my first anything until I was 28! So when my boyfriends’ mom sent me a recipe for a honey cake I was determined to bake it and send it to her. I thought "baking, how hard can it be?" Well 3 attempts later I finally had an edible honey cake.
The recipe card I was to use did not give much detail, and there were no step by step by instructions. I did not even know what some of the ingredients were. Shortening? What is that? When I got to the grocery store and realized what shortening was I was glad I had never used it before. Right then and there I decided to not mess around and took this recipe straight to the health food store. I found a shortening made from pine oil, as well as everything else I needed. I got home, set out all my ingredients and was happy my cake was going to be all natural and mostly organic.
With The Who’s Quadrophenia rocking out loud in the background, and me in my bee apron I began my first attempt at the honey cake.
I followed the directions exactly, but got a little confused. The recipe called for orange grinds and the next item on the list was coffee, so I just thought coffee
grinds. My cake came out dark black and tasted like burnt…I don’t know what. It looked sad. My first honey cake went to the compost.
I wanted to bake my friend a honey cake. This 2nd try did not go much better. I don’t know if it was the Pearl Jam music blasting in the back, or
thinking of things to do that day, but I was set on making a delicious honey cake. I did make cookies just in case and its a good thing I did!!
So my third crack at it was a good one! I got up early on my day off and was ready to bake. I decided to listen to Erykah Badu, she rocks my
world. The beats, her voice, the lyrics are all so good! I tied my apron, turned the music up and began to bake honey cake #3. I had enough experience with
cooking to know how to alter recipes to make them "my way" so this is what I did this time. I had picked up a few tips through my mistakes and put
them all to the test. "I am in love with a bumble bee" sings Erykah and I sing along, sifting, dancing, mixing, stirring, shaking my booty, pouring.."honey…
you’re so sweet" we both belt out. I am feeling good! I pour the cake into the greased pan and know this is it! An hour later I pulled the cake out of the oven,
sprinkled some powdered sugar over the top(which was my idea) and stuck my fork in the soft, brown cake and tried it. This one was good enough to send to my man’s mom!!!!
This got me buzzing…life is like baking. There are instructions, some more detailed than others. I think if you stick to the guide lines but do things your own way you can live a delicious life!

If you had to describe "music" to someone who has never heard it before how would you describe it?

Depends on the day. Right now I would say Blood On The Tracks (Bob Dylan). I haven’t listened to it in a while and I can’t find my fucking copy of it and its bugging the shit out of me.

If you were not a musician for your job, what would you be?

No idea. After doing this for 15 years, I don’t know. I would like to say I would be doing something profound and worthwhile, but probably not. Working a labor job or waiting tables or something, but probably going to see a lot more shows.

I have heard you play the drums so many times and even the guitar a little, are there any other instruments you like to play, even if just fo your own amusement?

I play a little piano once in a while, but really poorly. I have picked up the bass a bit. I spend most of my time working on music programs on my laptop, loops and such.

After being on the road with Dexter Grove for so long, what was one of the hardest adjustments you faced with moving to Portland Oregon?

First off, it was not being with the people I had spent so much time with for all those years. Then trying to get into a new community of musicians that I didn’t know very well and didn’t know me. But I moved here because I was always intrigued and inspired by what I had seen in the music community. A lot commradery and support of each other, very little competition. I am happy to say I made the right decision.

You have worked with many different musicians what do you like about working with Jerry Joseph?

There’s a lot of things I love about working with Jerry, but its his honesty and emotion in his music that I really love. Its ironic that the same things that attract so many of his fans are the same things that scare others away and keep him from hitting the mainstream. Some people find it too honest.

What have been some of your proudest musical accomplishments?

Being able to do this job for longer than I ever thought I would.

If you could ask any musician(live or dead) one question, who would you ask and what would the question be?

I’ve already got to meet and have a talk with Dean Ween, and I’m not telling what we talked about.

One rule I always live by is………………….

Express your personality in color!

Bees provide us with so many tools to heal our lives. These provisions are called Apitherapy. Apitherapy is the medical use of any honey bee product including, honey, pollen, royal jelly and bee venom.
There are some strange healing techniques being used today, and most would consider bee sting therapy to be one of them. However the venom from a bee can be support a healthy immune system, multiple scelerosis, depression and more! I was really curious and wanted to experience their healing venom for myself.
On a beeautiful summer morning, I went to visit Todd Hardy at Honey Gardens to recieve this treatment. I knew Honey Gardens was a special place and this was going to be a special occasion! It was not long before I was standing in the middle of four bee hives.
One might thing that with bees flying around and landing on me I would be a little nervous. Honestly the only time I was a little nervous was when Todd instructed me to stab myself in the leg with the epinephrine pen if I had a reaction. I knew I was not allergic to bees, but still! I then expressed my concern for the bee I would be sacrificing. I knew the bee was going to die after and I was not sure how I felt about that. The bees are already disapearing and now I was going to use one for my own benefit. Todd eased my guilt with the understanding that the bees natural instinct is to heal, that is their intention! Being the massage therapist that I am, I could really appreciate that.
With my job being a massage therapist my arms and wrist were in need of attention. Todd and I then sent a request to the bees and expressed our gratitude, followed by a silent prayer of our own for this and all bees! I stood there quiet and content as Todd took the bee with his tweezers and slowly stuck the stinger into my arm. As he did this, I gave thanks again and watched and felt intently as the slight pinch from where the sting had been placed. I saw the stinger seperate from the bee. Todd then left the stinger in my arm for about five minutes as the venom went on and into my arm.
After he removed the stinger my arm was red, but there was no pain. As I drove home I could feel a slight pressure on my arm. The pain in my hands and arm went away. The spot was itching like crazy as it healed, but overall is was an amazing memory.
What a truly great and natural alternative to heal some of those serious issues that people face. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort in your life maybe you can find relief from the healing sensation the honey bee!

We are all consumers of products. All of us spend our hard earned money on food and items we need to live. As inspiring Healthy Hippies we also take the health and safety of animals, the planet and ourselves into consideration.
In the first part of the article we talked about the importance of doing your own research. One of the reasons this is so important is because of the media. The media loves to tell us what we "need" and "can not live without." Usually this information is just a media fad, it is always changing and is generally marketed by the company that makes the product. If you think you want or need something you saw, do research first. Speak with a medical professional. You can also find out about what results others are having. Pay close attention to your own body and its needs. Just because it worked for one person does not mean it will work for everybody.
Lets Go Shopping!!!Trying to save money is something we are all aiming for. When looking at the price tag you will see the actual price and the unit price. The unit price is usually found in a small block to the left of the actual price. The unit price will tell you how much you are paying per unit. For example if you are buying something measured in quarts, the unit price will tell you how much you are spending per quart. This is a great way to compare prices to see if you are getting the best deal.
A few tips to help you save is make a list of the 20-30 items you buy the most and then compare those prices at the stores in your area. Cutting coupons is always a good way to get more for your money. And when you buy things in bulk you generally are saving money and waste materials!
For the most part if something is more expensive there is a reason. All natural and organic ingredients cost more to manufacture, using recycled and organic packing materials cost more to make, which will make the item more expensive. The good news is when you spend your money on these things you are supporting companies and farms that practice "green" lifestyles and you are keeping these businesses in demand! When you eat local and clean food, and use natural and organic products, be assured you are saving money on medical bills, and the alike.
All of these ideas, labels, ingredients, researching, pricing, and staying on top of the media can feel like a job in itself. Just practice these steps and it become easier to be a smart consumer of safe and healthy products.
