Please Welcome Ashley…….
"Instant Karma", as they say.
Choice and Consequence. In a puritan mind, Crime and Punishment. Call it what you wish, our actions beget re-actions. Now, I (and I happen to be of the Buddhist philosophy) have mixed ideas about the nature of karma; karma being my actions. That is to say, I’m not sure how my action, which was, in this case, shit-talking the swine flu as an exaggerated fear-mongering story of the CDC and the media, actually gave me the swine flu (it was undoubtedly some other action, like not washing my hands enough, or dropping my kid off at kindergarten)… but here I sit. A survivor of the most notorious virus this side of planet.
Now, I should state that I am not one for hospitals and syringes and such. So my H1N1 diagnosis is self-delivered. There has been a wave of "positive H1N1" cases washing up the coast from Mendocino to Oregon, so it seems likely enough. But the strain is irrelevant. Influenza sucks, regardless of the flavor. But, like all things that suck, even the flu offers deeply hidden and well-suffered-for revelations. Even blessings.
Three days of feeling like I ate bad acid, contracted a stomach virus, and then got beat in the abdomen with a baseball bat, oh, 30-40 times… "How is that a blessing, you insane goddess-crystal-starship worshipping wingnut???" you might ask. Well, it got my attention. It purged my body. It forced me to rest. It did for me the things I was "unable" or unwilling to do for myself. If I even thought about getting up to tend my kids, my partner, my work, or my house, Ol’ Swiney was like, "Hell no, get your ass back in that bed. You ain’t finished yet." I had no choice but to listen, lest I spread the joy of my flu symptoms throughout the land. So I slept. I fasted. I sweated. I dreamed (it was a wildly psychedelic flu). I contemplated death and gave thanks for life. It had all the elements of a good Shamanic soul-retrieval, and I didn’t pay a dime! I awoke the morning of the fourth day feeling clear, awake, electric, and grateful. I felt better than I had felt in years; since the last time I fasted, sweated, ate psychedelics, and purged. I was given a renewed awareness for my suffering.
***
If you find yourself with the flu, don’t freak out. Get a nurse (friend, partner, whoever you’re cool with puking in front of). Go to bed. Sleep. Stay hydrated. Take probiotics, or drink warm miso broth. If your fever is high, an infusion of elderflower or yarrow will aid your body in sweating out the virus. If you feel like the ride is more than you can handle (and be honest with yourself, but be mindful of your fear and how it can distort your perception) or if you’re in very poor health, get medical attention.
AND WASH YOUR HANDS, YO!!!

| Last January, I lost my 10yr. old Rottweiler, Grisman. My boyfriend at the time and I saved Grisman from the awful situation he was in. We had no idea of his history or anything about him, we just new that no animal should live like he was. I could not imagine my life if I had never met or got to share my life with such an amazing creature. Grisman was my whole world and I love him so much and miss him so much everyday. Here I am relaxing with Grisman.
It makes me so sad to think there are animals out there, that are so sweet, fun and awesome that can not find a good home. Please if you are looking for a pet check Save Our Strays first, you could be saving the pet that you have been looking for!
Send me a story about how you saved a pet and save $5 on your next treatment.

As I mentioned in my last newsletter, I was lucky enough to get an apitherapy treatment from Todd Hardy the owner of Honey Gardens here in Vermont.
What is apitherapy?
Apitherapy is, simply said, the use of Bee Products to Prevent, Heal or Recover somebody from one or more diseases/conditions. It is also the Art and Science of Treatment and Holistic Healing through the honeybee and her products for the benefit of Mankind and all the Animal Kingdom. www.apitherapy.com
I woke up early on Friday morning to be at Honey Gardens by 7am. I woke up very excited and interested to see what this apitherapy treatment was going to be like. All I knew was that Todd would sting me with a bee and the venom would heal me!
When I arrived I was automatically taken away by the beauty of the land Honey Gardens sits on. You can just feel the energy of the bees all around you. I felt so calm and content. It is a really special place. Todd took me the shop and where the honey was made as well as showed me the beautiful elderberry plants they have for sale for $12.
My friends thought I was crazy to drive 30mins. to get stung by a bee. It was so much more than getting stung!
When we arrived at the hives, he had asked me what needed attention and after doing 5hrs. of chair massage, my hands and arms were in need of some healing. I was pretty positive I was not allergic to bees, but just to be safe Todd explained to me what to do if I did have a bad reaction. I had to take an epinephrine pen and stab it into my leg. Lucky for me in so many ways, I am not allergic to bees!
As we all know when bees lose their stinger they die. So was I going to kill a bee for my own health, I was not sure how I felt about that. I asked Todd what he thought, he said its taken him awhile but has come to terms with it. He feels that bees natural instinct is to heal. Todd and I then did a prayer for the bees, we asked them permission and I thanked them over and over for all they do, and gave thanks to the universe for letting me be connected to such amazing creatures. As we were standing there in the summer morning sun, with bees flying around and the breeze blowing a slow and soft wind through the field and hives I knew why I had fallen in love with such extraordinary creatures. When I was ready Todd grabbed a bee from the hive and stuck the stinger in my lower right arm. It hurt like a bee sting, but nothing painful. I could see the venom from the bee going into my arm and I thanked the bee so much for healing my arm. The spot where I was stung had a small amount of pressure while I was driving home. So I could not help but think about the session and the bees. I felt as though this bees venom was inside me now, I was being healed long after the actual sting. I felt closer to the bees than ever. If you have been around or met Todd you can tell he just loves the bees and they love him. Its a true blessing to have experienced the healing effects of apitherapy from someone so close to the bees.
The only negative thing I have to say about the whole experience is when the sting is healing it itches like CRAZY! You are going to want to have some anti- sting or itch medicine to help you through that. It only last a day or two. My arm did feel great after the sting and even days after when they usually would have been sore. I will not use this type of treatment again only because of the bees and I don’t really need it that much, but people use Apitherapy for MS, Lyme disease and so many serious illnesses and I totally believe in it!
I will be writing more about my experience in the September/October issue of the Healthy Hippie Magazine.
If you would like more information on Honey Gardens please visit www.honeygardens.com. They have honey, plant medicines and the best mead you will ever have! I am looking to have a mead tasting in the fall so I will be sure to let you know. Until then stop in at Honey Gardens on RTE. 7 in Ferrisburg or visit them online and don’t go another day without trying the meads, they even have one called Melissa named after Melissa, the greek goddess of the bees!
I also need to send a special thank you to Todd! Thanks for one of the most unforgettable experiences ever.

Just Bee! That is the company I would like to talk about today. I have so much love for this company, not only because of the sweet and generous owner, or the great clothes, cards and other gifts but because of their awareness to support the bees. For those of you in California you can check out Just Bee at the Hermosa Beach Art Walk this weekend. If you do not live in Cali. please visit them online at www.justbeeinc.com
Right now she is having a special on her purple shirts! I got mine and it’s so comfortable, cute and shows support for the bees! What more do you need in a shirt?
Why are they on special?
*Because they are special and here is why:
1) Bee-cause the shirt is violet and violet is the bees favorite color.
(2) Bee-cause the shirt is violet and violet is the color of the crown chakra, the color that represents our connection to source.
(3) Bee-cause of the design and message: bees represent the ability to
do the impossible by defying the laws of aerodynamics and flying.
They’re not supposed to fly, BUT DO ANYWAY!!
(4) Bee-cause bees dance to communicate and dancing is fun and makes us feel good.
5) Bee-cause the shirt has stripes on the arms like the strips found on bees.
(6) Bee-cause bees movement from one plant to another symbolizes the interconnectedness of all living things.
